A Sommelier in the making

A Taste of Sommelier Life: My Journey in Wine and What’s Coming to Verdmont

For anyone who loves wine, the idea of becoming a sommelier seems like a dream job—tasting incredible wines, sharing your knowledge, and unlocking the mysteries of each bottle.

Well, I’ve decided to dive into that world by taking a sommelier course, and I can’t wait to share my journey (and some great wines) with all of you!

The Art (and Science) of Wine Tasting

When people think of sommeliers, they often imagine a sophisticated expert with a glass of wine in hand, describing aromas like “freshly mown grass” or “hints of elderflower.” But behind those poetic descriptions is a world of hard work, learning, and (surprise!) lots of fun.

Training to be a sommelier is about more than just tasting wine—it’s about learning the history, geography, and science behind every bottle. From understanding how the soil in Barolo shapes its famous red wines to mastering food pairings, being a sommelier is both art and science.

As I work my way through the course, I’ve come to realize just how much there is to know.

From grape varieties to winemaking techniques, it’s like opening a treasure chest of flavors and stories. Every sip has something to teach you, and every bottle has a story to tell. It’s all about tuning your senses—learning to really see, smell, and taste what’s in the glass.

Some Fun Surprises Along the Way

One of the unexpected joys of sommelier training is discovering the quirks and nuances that make wine such a fascinating subject. For example, did you know that some wines can actually taste better after a thunderstorm? Or that the way you hold your glass can affect how you perceive the aromas? (Yes, it really makes a difference!)

I’ve also learned that the language of wine is full of surprises. While some terms can sound intimidating at first (like “terroir” or “tannin structure”), they all boil down to describing the way wine interacts with the world around it—from the land it comes from to the way it’s aged. And the more you learn, the more exciting it becomes to share that knowledge with others.

Bringing the Experience to Verdmont: Wine Tastings Coming Soon

I’m excited to bring everything I’m learning to Verdmont. Once the course is complete, we’ll be offering curated wine tastings right here at the hotel! Whether you’re a seasoned wine lover or just starting to explore, these tastings will be all about fun, discovery, and enjoying some of the best wines Italy (and beyond) has to offer.

Imagine sitting on our terrace, overlooking the beautiful hills of Monferrato, with a glass of Barbera in hand. I’ll guide you through the tasting, sharing stories about the wines, the winemakers, and what makes each bottle unique.

We’ll explore how different wines pair with the incredible local food, and maybe even uncover a few new favorites along the way.
