Explore Abandoned Antique Baths to Hilltop Chapel loop

This loop from the Antique baths is a dive into history. You can walk the loop either way and explore the Ancient at the beginning or the end. The starting point is steps away from the Roman aqueduct arches you can explore those too!

On the map below the loop starts by parking you car right outside the Antiche Terme which is the old bathing houses that were at the peak around 1936-50

To give you a feel for how this were I have included old postcards so you can contrast to today.

The old baths

Walking up hill you will pass a little town Lussito. Enjoy a panoramic view across the valley from behind the church.

Continue to the Ovrano just before the chapel you will see an old washing station.

The little Chapel emerging from the mist of the morning

This is the farthest point you are now on the return journey. After exploring the chapel and the Ciabot. A Ciabot is a little stone rest cabin for those working in the vines before transport was cheap and available.

You will pass though a little Borgo and a deep valley carved by a water way. The nest point of interest will be the Fontana Fredda or cold fountain which is the sulphourous water but cold. I have included some photos

Characteristics of the Fonte Fredda (Acqua Marcia):
Temperature: Approximately 19°C, much colder than other springs.
Composition: Rich in sulfides, they give it strong antioxidant properties, useful for inhalation and dermatological treatments.
Location: Located in the area of the Ancient Baths, across the Bormida River, beneath a small neoclassical temple.

Accessibility: It is freely accessible and can be reached by walking along the “Passeggiata della Fontana Fredda” (Frozen Fountain Walk).
Area of the Acqui Terme:
Acqui Terme is famous for its thermal waters, especially the Fonte Bollente (74.5°C).

The spa area, which includes the Fonte Fredda, is a historic site with formerly important thermal facilities.

If you are interested the pool was inaugurated in 1932 and remained open until 2019, when the private equity firm who purchased the entire Spa area decided to close it. It has been a contested area ever since.

Finally you can visit the Roman arches that have stood for 2000 years
